About Referee Training School (RTS)
Referee Training School (RTS) is owned and operated by Crane and Tonya Hearn and proudly based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Since 1991, we have been deeply rooted in sports officiating and coaching, bringing more than 50 years of combined experience across multiple sports, including basketball, volleyball, girls’ lacrosse, wheelchair basketball, and baseball.
RTS represents more than a business — it reflects our commitment to developing confident, competent, and well-prepared officials. As partners in life and in leadership, we take pride in working side by side to train and mentor the next generation.
Officiating has given us countless opportunities we value deeply: staying physically active, building meaningful relationships with youth and families, traveling, and remaining closely connected to the games we love. More importantly, it has given us a platform to teach discipline, accountability, professionalism, and integrity.
Our passion for sports naturally evolved into a passion for entrepreneurship and mentorship. In 2010, that passion led us to create ATP – All Things Possible Teenpreneurs, a program designed for youth ages 8–15. ATP equips young people with practical entrepreneurial skills, teaching them how to think creatively, act responsibly, and earn income with confidence. “TeenP’s,” as we affectionately call them, learn how to take initiative and operate with maturity beyond their years.
At RTS, everything we do centers on purpose, integrity, transparency, and impact. Whether we are officiating, training, mentoring, or building businesses, our mission remains the same: to serve, inspire, and create opportunities for the next generation.

Referee Training School is more than a program that trains officials. It is part of a family legacy shaped by perseverance, faith, and responsibility across generations.
Our story begins with our great-great-grandfather, Wash Hearn. Once enslaved, he later earned land and passed it down to his descendants. At a time when ownership was denied to many, he created opportunity for those who would come after him.
The next generation carried that responsibility forward. Our father, James B. Hearn, an eighth-grade dropout and self-made businessman, protected our family history by documenting our family tree in a book, "The Odyssey of a Christian Businessman" — ensuring that our story would not be forgotten.
Each generation built upon the foundation of the one before it.
Referee Training School reflects that same commitment. Officiating is not simply about enforcing rules during a game. It is about protecting the integrity of competition and serving the athletes, teams, and communities who trust the process.
We believe officiating is a craft that requires preparation, discipline, and accountability. Officials should be developed, supported, and respected, because every contest deserves fairness and integrity.
Our family story mirrors the work of an official. Our ancestors preserved ownership and dignity under pressure. Today we work to preserve fairness and order under pressure — on courts, fields, and playing surfaces across our community.
That is legacy in action.
